I missed this (unsurprisingly) last week over at Liberal Conspiracy, until PoliticalBetting picked up on it as well. “Here’s how Boris will lose the London Mayoral election” is rather wishful thinking to say the very least. Liberal Conspiracy revelled in their ability to reveal that each of the new Routemasters costs us £1.56 million, which I am not doubting is far too expensive for something that clearly falls under the title of ‘vanity project’. What annoys me is the hypocrisy involved.
Liberal Conspiracy are presuming that the public wouldn’t like Boris if he tried to tackle ambitious projects. Everyone knew Boris had grandiose visions for making London the greenest city in the world today. These buses, it should be pointed out are 15% more fuel efficient than bendy buses and 40% more so than traditional double-deckers. Even without looking at this through a greenist lens, more fuel efficient buses is a good thing.
The reason I was looking forward to these new buses was the iconography, which I fear will still be somewhat missing if only five of these are pottering around through London. I find it hypocritical that those over at Liberal Conspiracy are willing to attack Boris for overspending on a green project, yet constantly favour expensive green renewable energy sources over the alternatives (Liberal Conspiracy search for “renewables”).
Political Betting were right to question “Could this bus really cost Boris the mayoralty?” Don’t get me wrong, I’m against this act of overspending in a time of supposed austerity, but I am more against the hypocrisy of the left in this case. And if they think that this will cost Boris his mayoralty, frankly they’re mad.
