Today’s YouGov poll shows that 57% of the country thought Cameron has handled the riots badly, 58% think that Theresa May has and 54% think that Boris Johnson has. Not a very good time to be a politician it would seem, certainly not a Conservative one.
Which is why Michael Gove’s absolute battering of Harriet Harman on Newsnight last night was so welcome. Gove has proved himself, once again, to be one of the best members of our cabinet. You know it’s going to be a good ‘un when Gove says, “I used to have an enormous amount of respect for Harriet [...] but frankly I’m appalled that Harriet can speak out of both sides of her mouth at once.”
But the really great segment starts around 5:36 when Gove gets angry, “If there is anyone who is responsible for the environment in which these young people grew up, its you and the Labour Party.” He then goes on for a full minute while she flounders to get a response. Gove at his best. If only Cameron had such emotion…
